Music List - Albums D

Some real favourites here. Dusted is one of my most-loved albums. It's the work of Rollo and the Faithless crew. I remember hearing a track as Mark and Lard's record of the week in the days when they had the Radio 1 afternoon show and I was travelling a lot. The Dead 60s is also an album I turn to when I need to dance alone around the house. Cross between old fashioned R and B and Madness. Definition of Sound was my second ever hip-hop album. The first, by Disposable Heroes, is also here. I bought a remastered Department S compilation recently, hoping they had done other stuff as good as their singles Going Left Right and Is Vic There? They hadn't. Ian Dury and Dr John always a delight. The latter an inspiration as a pianist.  Dr Feelgood on in the car at the moment and What Were Once Vices another candidate for favourite album with no stand-out track. I wonder if Kind of Blue is the album I own that most other people own?

Check out Dr Feelgood doing Roxette here. Sorry about the talking-a-bit-pretentiously introduction first. So, the Ds:

A Few Thoughts on Baptism

Recently a member of the church I pastor - we'll call him Bill - left to join another, local evangelical church. Not an Anglican one. This member had been baptised and confirmed an Anglican and I had the great pleasure of baptising one of his children, old enough to make the promises for herself.

Another member of the church approached me a few weeks later and asked how I thought she should respond to an invitation to Bill's baptism. Apparently he was being baptised by immersion into membership of this new church.

We seem to be in a mess about baptism again.

The arguments for and against infant baptism have been well rehearsed. To summarise the pro position - whole households were baptised in the New Testament which knows of no way to treat someone as a Christian except to baptise them.

Those who practice only 'believers'' baptism argue that a profession of faith is needed from the lips of the candidate before any baptism takes place. Such people object to the practice of infant baptism (they tend to call it 'christening') and particularly to indiscriminate baptism which treats everyone as in before they opt out rather than vice-versa.

I don't think it's ever going to be resolved although it is a muddle for those who are on the outside of the church looking in. A parish with a strict policy looks silly if people simply go to another church of the same denomination just down the road.

As many of you know the practice of confirmation is to allow those who were baptised as infants to make their promises for themselves. It is administered by a bishop (I know not why). It is also the rite of full membership of the Anglican church although it feels a little odd to many adult converts who are asked to be baptised and then confirmed in quick succession. I was baptised aged 4 months and confirmed aged 19.

I wondered what they did at an American church I really respect - Mars Hill Bible Church. Their web-site states their policy as 'accepting anyone's baptism as valid if they do.' So, if you are satisfied that your 'christening' aged 4 months was valid, Mars Hill will be too. If you are not they will baptise you.

It saves a  lot of trouble and offers those who practice infant baptism more respect than most non-Anglicans do.

As with much Anglican stuff, I wouldn't choose to start from here, but I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Music List - Albums C

Chakk's album was twenty years too early. Keith Christmas was the support act at the first gig I ever went to alone (Ten Years After, Birmingham Town hall, 1971) and I was mesmerised by his guitar style but forgot him for thirty-five years until Amazon came along. The Christians (not Christians particularly) were a great band and the album has a lovely sense of progression to it. Great live at Rock City in about 1987 or 8. Commander Cody are a fine moonstomp, bar rock, country, truck-driving band. Again, great live and yet often the cause of divorce-related conversations (for instance, when I play their music in the house). Ry Cooder is a genius and has done as much as Peter Gabriel to get world music to the masses. Of course he promoted the Buena Vista Social Club which, amazingly, I have never catalogued and need to re-insert in yesterday's B-list.

Indestructible Toys

The giant tennis ball lasted three days. The green springy thing was an aid to toothy health and guaranteed indestructible. Lasted three hours. We need more things to chew. Preferably made out of the same material as the black boxes for flight recorders.

Music List - Albums A

So the singles thing was a bit of a passing phase. Individual tunes are easily listened to on YouTube these days if you get the whim. Today I only buy old singles from charity shops and nothing more. And that gets us to?

There's an episode of the West Wing where C.J.Cregg has her first day as The President's Chief of Staff. Her secretary, Margaret has just listed several tasks and meetings and CJ says, 'And that gets us to?'

8.30 is the answer. And we are left with no doubt this is a.m.

Well I've been for a long and beautiful walk in the Somerset countryside, tidied the conservatory twice, done all the recycling sorting, updated my blog and had breakfast and it appears to be 7.30 a.m. The next two weeks in the company of Diesel the labrador are going to see a subtle change to my working patterns.

He is eating a giant tennis ball at the moment. That is fine as the debris can be thrown away but the indestructible squeaky duck may have to be confiscated.

Good for you bad for you

The sidebar today pays homage to the statistic, widely quoted this week in the press, that those who exercise for 15 minutes a day are healthier than those who don't. And people who watch six hours of TV or more a day are more obese, subject to more health problems and more likely to be unemployed than those who don't.

I ask with all humility, but could it be possible that carts and horses have been placed in the wrong order here?

Music List - R

For many years Babylon's Burning was my go-to single for an instant hit of energy and excitement. A year or two into the punk era and a well-crafted song with snarling vocal but great musicianship hit the airwaves. I loved it. Notice too the way all good, angry songs should end - four chopped chords. Then, after a while, I had played it too much and it lost its edge. I wouldn't take it to my desert island any more but playing it once a year or so is thrilling. It's on YouTube here.

That and the rest of the Rs:

The Youth of Today

There was a small piece in the corner of page something-or-other-well-beyond-3 in theipaper this week. It was about an emergency sitting of courts the day after an atrocity. Forty two young people were being charged with offences of looting and theft. 'Has it come to this?' A local resident, recently bereaved, might have said.

The piece was in the 'On this day' corner and described events following the bombing of London in 1941.

'Youth has no regard for old age, and the wisdom of the centuries is looked down upon both as stupidity and foolishness. The young men are indolent; the young women are indecent and indecorous in their speech, behaviour and dress.'
(Peter the Hermit, 1114, quoted by the late Mark Ashton in Christian Youth Work, Kingsway 1986.)

I am not convinced there is any one reason why our towns and cities fell victim to such outrageous behavior last week but:

1. It seems the perpetrators are gradually being rounded up and charged.

2. Opportunistic looting and peer-pressured rudeness seem to have been with us for quite a long time so it was probably not as extraordinary as some might make out.

Nice Review of Mustard Seed Shavings

Just received this book review from REFORM magazine:

Steve Tilley sets out to write a book on the implications of living life as a Christian – the book that he wished he could have read when he first became a Christian. The chapters roughly follow the themes of the 10 commandments, reflecting on issues of life that crop up, and how to deal with them.

The book begins with advice for all seeking to know “the Lord your God” through listening and questioning, but with the reminder that we shall never know everything about God. On the subject of idols, Tilley challenges the reader not to be an idolater, but instead be an idol, whereby our lives point others to God. In the following chapters: unwholesome talk, taking time to enjoy God’s world and honouring others (including our parents) is dealt with. On the topic of murder, Tilley challenges the reader to take stock and deal with whatever form of violence is present in his or her life.

The following chapter, titled “Sexy Stuff”, succinctly and helpfully covers the issues surrounding the gift of sexuality within our relationships, including his opinion on the limits of what is appropriate for it to be Godly. This leads to two remaining chapters which feature discussions on true honesty: where mercy, grace, loyalty and honour get a look in as we follow the way, the truth and the life.

Tilley is probably correct in his conclusion that he has provoked more questions than he has answered, and this is largely due to the numerous issues covered. However, I think that is the sign of a good author who is happy to give readers some pointers and then leave them thinking for themselves, with discussion questions added for that purpose. So, although not a biblical or scholarly look at the 10 commandments, there is meat here in this little book that will make you think, whether you are a new Christian or someone who wants to think again about living
out faith today.

Godstuff Editorial Meetings

It is 1215. Three volunteers sit round a table. Bob enters the room:

Bob
I've just discovered a massive sod's law field.

(Steve and Matt ignore him. Alasdair falls into the trap of responding)

Alasdair
What's that?

Bob
I printed a whole page of these labels on blank paper to check they worked. They worked. When I used actual labels they all went wrong.

(Steve and Matt smirk to themselves. Alasdair mourns the loss of three minutes of his life)

It's not me who created the sod's law field. Rymans impregnated all these labels so we would waste lots of their stickers.

Alasdair
These are really sticky.

Rest of Cast
They're called stickers.

Alasdair
How is putting stickers in books part of my job? It's nothing to do with the web-site.

Bob
They've got the web address on them.

Alasdair
Oh.

Matt
Is it time for the pub yet?

Exeunt

To be continued...

CYFA Resources

Between 1992 and 2002 I was responsible for producing the output of CYFA teaching resources. Over that period I helped to publish about twenty titles in the Bible Based Resources for Youth Groups (BBRYG) series. Some of these (64 page A4) booklets took the Bible and asked 'What can we learn from this?' Others took issues and asked, 'What does the Bible say about this?' All bar one had ten sessions in them and included photocopiable work sheets.

To go alongside this I wrote or commissioned four volumes called Know Ideas (no, I can't take credit for volume 1, Phil Moon and John Simmons did that) which were packed full of ideas for games, ice-breakers etc. Also two volumes of Drama, Verses, Sketches which did what it said on the cover.

I did this from the offices of CPAS (Church Pastoral Aid Society) who have now decided not to sell such resources and have got rid of all their stock. Godstuff is a small charity which supports the work of my friend and former CPAS colleague Bob Clucas. It has bought all the back copies of all of these resources. We plan to make them available for almost nothing. That's right search engines. Find this post if anyone enters free or youth or resources.

The plan is this. The resources are, as you might imagine, dated. We will scan and publish online the first two sessions from each book and sell the books in bundles of five for £10 (a saving of £27.50). If anyone simply asks for a deal we will talk. If anyone is broke we will not worry about the money too much.

Beginning with Didn't He Used to be Dead? a BBRYG book on Jesus in Luke's Gospel which we have few copies of, we will be reworking the material so it is up-to-date and will then invite youth leaders who use it to add their ideas.

If you are an author of this material (I worked with some co-authors) and you are unhappy about this please get in touch. I will be trying to contact all of you over the next few days.

Apart from Urban Saints excellent Energize material I am not aware of what else is around in the youth market these days or of any organisation that has specifically taken on resourcing CYFA and Pathfinder groups from CPAS. Are you?

Everything is Obvious

I caught a bit of an interview with Duncan Watts on the radio last night. He is a sociological mathematician and the author of the fabulously titled Everything is Obvious Once You Know the Answer.

Since he works as a Yahoo researcher now he knows everything there is to know about social networking. His thesis that our recent riots were mathematically and sociologically predictable was fascinating.

We reach L. A sad moment as I recall the excellence of the two singles by Philip Lynott as a solo artist outside the constraints of Thin Lizzy. He would have been a great song writer even today had he not died so young. 'King's Call' is an Elvis tribute.
