Leamington FC 3 Westfields 2

Saw the fastest goal ever recorded at the New Windmill tonight - timed at 10 seconds. Nearly saw another interesting record broken but Jon Adams spoiled it.

We kicked off and passed the ball back to Jamie Towers who hit a long through ball for Clunesy (Martin Thompson - looks like Martin Clunes) to chase. Westfields centre half just got there first and shanked it up in the air over his keeper and towards the net. Two yards from the line Jon Adams headed it home.

Otherwise it would have been one of the fastest own goals on record and possibly the first time a whole team's first kick was to score an OG. Statos of the world unite. Tell me how wrong I am. I know you will.

After six minutes it was 2-0 with a cruel (if it's against you) and hilarious (if it's in your favour) deflection sending the keeper sprawling in two directions at once and prodding the ball just inside his own post, legs akimbo the while.

Then Westfields scored a good goal. 8 minutes. 2-1.

Then there was a bit of a lull for 75 minutes or so in which the crowd annoyed their number two who annoyed Clunesy who retaliated and got booked and then Stewart Herlihy made sure the guy knew he was numbered and Stewart got booked for his trouble. Number four started rowing with the crowd - never a good idea.

Then they equalised. Then we scored another deflected goal. Their number four tried to get into the crowd to 'have a word' with the people who had been goading him. All cracking entertainment for £5 plus £1 for a programme and 50p for a tea bag in a cup of hot water.

Two more home games before leaving.

I try my best to know absolutely nothing about football, so I'm disturbed beyond belief to discover that I not only know that there has been a faster own goal, but that I can also recall some of the details.

In the late 70s a Torquay player managed to score an own goal in six seconds - and it was also his side's first touch of the match. I forget who the player in question was, or who Torquay were playing, but basically the other team punted the ball towards the Torquay goal, and the hapless player in question leapt up and managed to head the ball past his own keeper and into the net.

The incident is recounted in the very funny book "The Return of Heroic Failures" by Stephen Pile, if anyone was wondering how I knew...

Which is, incidentally, one of the greatest, 'Rescue the preacher when he has no anecdote' books of all time. Course I've never used it myself.

I love that book. It let me know of the worse child's name of all-time (and simultaneously, the worst parents of all -time too): "Depressed Cupboard Cheesecake".

I promise, I'm not joking.

Which team(s) will you support once you move to nailsea?

I support West Brom. I'm a Baggie since age 12. However I can't get to watch them so I watch my local team. When in the north-east I watched Sunderland, now I watch the Brakes after a brief dabble with the Sky Blues on arrival. I look forward to discovering the local team. Looks like Nailsea United. Love their URL:

I can see the appeal of the URL, even though I'm not a cider drinker myself. Makes my own URL seem a bit dull. Anyway, enjoy your Somerset Senior League games.
