Spring in the Air Vicar

Spring in the air yourself madam (it's a very old joke).

But spring is in the air and a wren family have taken over our garden birdbox. It has remained unoccupied since the last wren family used it a few years ago. It's meant to be a tit box with an entrance hole too big for wren comfort, but chicks are definitely being reared in there now.

The male wren has a tough life. It makes about six nexts in various places, every year. Then it sings for a partner. Having pulled, it shows the future Mrs Wren around the nests and she chooses one which they then finish.

The chicks are brooded for a few short weeks and then they all leave the nest on the same day and spend about a day close to the nest, then scarper. We were fortunate enough to see this happen last time. Hope we do again. Six fluffy wren chicks is a nice sight.

Great to see Springwatch back on our screens. After Coast it was the best documentary last year. The programme is fantastically informative, with the added attraction of Kate Humble spending every programme trying to avoid saying 'Lets go and find out what on earth is going on with my tits' and Bill Oddie trying not to laugh at that.

Simon King has developed the habit of stopping speaking, even in the middle of a piece to camera, when the desk manager talks into his ear-piece and then replying audibly to all of us with a 'Yes OK' or suchlike. Great to know these presenters are respected more for their wildlife skills than TV subtlety.

8.00 p.m. BBC2, every night. Watch it.

I love springwatch watched it last year www.bbc.co.uk/springwatch. I am sure that Kate tried to say something different than the comments about her birds/family. Not how they have given the family names rather than the "tit" family.

We had some birds (I don't know what type - they were just nice, pretty birds) in our birdbox. Alas, we missed their departure, and sadly, one didn't make it.
