Mermaids Wearing Blue Jeans
Great night out at Salisbury City Hall where Seth Lakeman and a very talented little band joined the dots between medieval court folk singers and country rock. Whilst perhaps the most remarkable thing about Seth (his brother Sean is in the band on guitar) is his ability to play fiddle and sing rock simultaneously I love the contemporary feel he gives to ancient themes. These songs are not about conventional love or drugs or the modern condition. He sings of lifeboat crews, mining disasters, soldiers off to war, drinking games in Tavistock Pubs and standing stones. And for a fiddle player the fiddle doesn't dominate. New album out end of June. Meanwhile Freedom Fields is the one to get.
