Who Knows the Messiah?

It's been nice to hear a 'best of' Letter from America on Radio 4. I loved Alastair Cooke and on the occasion of what would have been his 100th birthday it is a fitting tribute to hear him again.

Tonight though, one sentence jumped out. 'I was able to introduce Leonard Bernstein to 'The Messiah.'

I knew Alastair Cooke had connections but that's impressive.

The consistently larger-than-life Leonard Bernstein was a compulsive, enthusiastic and indiscriminate kisser.

On the morning of his audience with the Pope, the maestro received a telegram from his brother:

'Lenny, the ring - not the lips.'
