Advent Thought 10

I was gazing at the palm of my hand and remembered, as I always do, the line, 'Mummy I've found a light bulb.' Then I tripped and Selly Oak Accident and Emergency did the rest. I would have been about eight or nine. The U-shaped scar is the aide-memoire.

My hands have taken a lot of stick. The gash caused by the door at 1, School Lane. The stitches put in the cut when the webbing split after taking that sensational catch at square leg. Marks and memories. But...

'...scars are not failures, they are externalised success stories of injuries that have healed.' (Debs Paterson reflects on her near-fatal motor accident in the Independent Review, 28/9/04).

'Hands that flung stars into space
To cruel nails surrendered.'
(Graham Kendrick, The Servant King, 1983)

Christ himself bore our sins in his body on the tree... by his wounds you have been healed.' (1 Peter 2:24)
