Standard Sizes
Interesting conversation over the lunch table in which some of us noted that St Paul's Cathedral was often used as a standard of comparative sizing. So news readers will say if something is bigger/taller than St Paul's Cathedral. Wales works similarly - the only use for Wales frankly, and so does a bag of sugar and a human hand. Any others?

To go off topic momentarily, but you did mention Wales.
I'm going to Wales for a few days this week. Normally when I go to Wales I fly into and out of Bristol. If that had been the case, a stop-over at Holy Trinity, Nailsea would have been in order on Sunday morning.
Unfortunately for the first time ever I am flying into and out of Cardiff. In other words, BMI Baby beat EasyJet in the price war.
Damn!
This was a suggestion on 'Genius' - Dave Gorman's radio show quite recently. I think the 'Wales' was a unit suggested and the guy could even quantify Australia as x number of Waleses!
How about the Peter Crouch as a unit of height?

We tend to be across on a fairly irregular basis for Ulster away matches, generally to Wales and therefore generally through Bristol.
Next time we're in Bristol ...

Though admittedly Blackpool tower is often used for the somewhat different 'and if soandso told you to jump off Blackpool tower, would you??'
