Encouraged by a post Mike wrote here I am starting an occasional series of assumptions people make about clergy. It is in my mind because of this conversation with someone yesterday:
St: Thanks for your answerphone message. I'm sorry I didn't call you back last night but I was very late in.
Reply: That's OK. I didn't realise Monday was your day off.
I love the idea that I am only allowed to stay out late on my day off.

Assumptions: clergy have never heard anyone swear before, so you have to apologise profusely if you say something naughty in front of them.

People also assume that you are either:
significantly underpaid or overpaid.
