Taste and See

Taste and See is the name of a meeting of a group of men from Trendlewood in the Farmhouse pub every Monday night at 9.30 p.m. There is a photo of some of the guys if you follow the link at the top of this post. The stag is a gate crasher, or, more technically, a wall crasher. As the old joke goes - must have been going at quite a pace to end up stuck like that.

We allegedly meet to talk about the important things of life (I now gather) so if you are local and have a question about the important things of life why not drop in?

Hrmphhhh, sorry St, I'm going to take us on a temporary rant-diversion here.

What is it with us Christians needing to name our groups after phrases found in the Bible? I can think of a million more appropriate name for a mens pub group than "Taste and See" which sounds like it should be a slot on Saturday Kitchen, or (as most of my friends would see it) a chance to be force fed pat Christian answers in the hope that you will suddenly get it. "Force-feed and get it" might be an alternative name (I know it's not that, but that's how a lot of my friends would take the name)

I'm not having a dig - I promise! The world needs more men's groups in pubs talking about the big issues of life - and I realise the name really isn't that important - but man, can someone turn the cringe-dial down in the wider church please.

(I'm going to get lynched, aren't I?)

Our group for retired / nearly retired people spent some time looking for a name. I was fearing Golden Years or Methuselah, but they came up with Extra Time, which can be the most exciting part of a footie match.

When my younger was organising the school Christmas do for old folk he designed a card with the slogan 'Free cake and no stairs.'
