Today

Had to get up at 5.45a.m. to go to Stanstead to pick up younger son and two friends who have been walking in Sweden for a month. Greeted three bearded crusties who had just been given a hard time at customs at both airports - in Sweden because they looked like converts to Islam (allegedly) and therefore fundamentalist hijackers and in England because they looked like drug smugglers. Memo to hijackers and drug smugglers - get a suit and a shave and Stockholm security will be fine. Junior is now in the bath following surgery to have his socks removed.

On the drive I listened to the whole of the Today progamme on Radio 4. How many goes does our great news broadcasting service need to get the difference between evangelicals and evangelists? Also got annoyed at the line 'all evangelicals and conservatives oppose this appointment' (of a gay bishop). All? Have they asked them all? They haven't asked me and I am certainly ambivalent rather than opposed.

Also noticed that Kelly (the Downing Street spokesman) has had to apologise for making a disparaging remark about Kelly (the defence expert who committed suicide) because it intruded on the latter's family's grief. Yet the remark was not meant to be published. It was off-the-record. So who intruded on the family's grief? The press, that's who. Have written to Today and told them.
