Working as I do for a Diocese, this is something I have to think about. (and 'Diocese' is a very odd word! especially to people outside of the church.)
I agree with you on the pronunciation although if people are reading 'Dioceses' it often comes out at Di-os-ees-iss.
I'm happer I think with the word "Diocesan" and then you can just pluralise that which it refers to, eg Diocesan Bishops, Diocesan web sites etc
'Diocese'always sounds to me like the name of some hero or another in a Greek Odyssey (which makes me wonder about the pluaral of odyssey?)
The Anglican communion is falling apart, pews are emptying, gays get married in Church, lead is being stolen from Church roofs, General Suynod is about to debate some of the most far reaching and potentially damaging matters . . . and you worry about how to pronounce dioceses? Oh dear!
Thanks. I think we can agree there is no agreement but it was good to have a brief survey. Anonmymous; your comment about 'Aren't there more important things to talk about?'is interesting. Would love to get some context by knowing a bit about you but I will post further on this question.
...don't want to appear apathetic, but I probably don't, st.
ReplyDeleteHmm. By connotation with diocesan, maybe die o scissors?
ReplyDeleteI always thought that the singular is 'die o sis' with the plural being 'die o seize', so I guess I'm on that side of the fence!
ReplyDeleteSeize the day, says me.
ReplyDeleteNo other choice!
: - )
I'm a die o-seize man myself but can't help wondering why you are wondering!
ReplyDeleteI'm another seizer...
ReplyDeleteSurely one Diocese is more than enough to cope with!
ReplyDelete'die o seize' but then I would have written it diocese and pronounced it differently. I have indeed learnt something today.

I think

ReplyDeleteAt least we can spell 'synod'.
ReplyDeleteDiosis for the singular.
ReplyDeleteDioseez for the plural.
But last time I was at Church House, dioseez was normal for the singular, with various horrible variants for the plural.

ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying a lighter conversation as a change from my work!
ReplyDeletePS it was a blessing of a civil partnership.
