English

"It's time for a British boss, somebody who understands our passion, belief and commitment. There's no distinction between English and British."

This from Premiership Chairman Dave Richards, quoted on the BBC web-site.

Oh isn't there? My Welsh and Scottish friends would have a bit to say about that. As it is true that all the really good bits about being British are either English or in England I think that if we appointed an English football manager who understood, passionately, why England is great and not just another name for Britain or the UK it would be worth a goal start.

But then, I remember Keegan...

Good point; well made. Possibly he didn't have quite the team to work with as the new guy will have.

Of course we're capable of being spectacularly inward-looking and arrogant. That's one of the most important bits about being English!

Other countires are passionate in a namby-pamby European way; or in an slicker-than-thou we-may-not-have-as-much-money-but-we-have-more-fun Latin American way. We are passionate in a fat, sunburnt, oi oi, beer-swigging way. The best way! The English way! Oh how you'll miss this country when you go, Caroline! :)

Jon there are two Carolines who regularly drop in. It was the one you don't know who commented.

By the way there is a false dichotomy between passionate and poised. I know several people who manage both.

Then leave your surname! As someone called Jonathan, or sometimes Jon, it is mandatory for me to do this unless I want mass confusion to follow. People with other names should take note, I feel...

Apologies to the Carolines for confusing you two.
